The Yoga Sutras tell us that our most reliable knowledge comes from direct comprehension. Even then, we often tend to see what we want to see and miss seeing what is actually there. That being said, I want to share three things about eating that I believe to be true based on my own observation. I know of no scientific studies that corroborate my observations, yet I still believe them and operationally they work for me.
- When I eat nutritionally, I am not as hungry and don't seem to need as many calories to be satisfied. Could be the protein (I get 20 to 30 percent of my calories in protein each day). Or it could be that I get 100 percent of my USDA vitamin and mineral needs from food. Or both. In any case, I am well satisfied eating less if I eat nutritiously.
- It takes your body a while to change, but once it becomes accustomed to a state, it will strive to maintain that state. If I'm starting each day with sugary pastries and coffee, my body will crave sugar and pastries every day. If I'm thriving on nutrition-dense food, my body will insist on nutrition-dense food everyday. Science call it homeostasis and I sense it occurring in me.
- People who are successful with weight issues in their lives do it themselves. The don't use pills or tricks or diets or doctors or clinics. They make up their minds that they are going to do it, make a plan and get it done.
I can site no scientific studies to prove these three assertions, but they work for me. What do you think?
