Unintended Consequences

This guy has his priorities straight. A new book discloses that self-made, Irish-American Chuck Feeney has given away nearly $5 billion. He's working hard to give more away in his lifetime.

"There are no pockets in a shroud," he said.

How did he do it? "I set out to work hard, not to get rich."

Often good things blossom as by-products of a well executed plan.

You've heard the story. Set do do what you want to do and good things will happen. If you decided that you want to eat better to thrive and develop a way to do it, you will lose weight as a consequence. You will also experience improvement in many biomarkers, like lower cholesterol, lower blood pressure and lower risk of diabetes. You'll feel good.

On the other hand if you set out to simply lose weight, the odds are 85 percent that you either won't lose the weight or you won't keep it off. You'll feel crappy. Even worse than when you started.
