Vitamin B3 Protects Against Skin Cancer

According to ITV news, Australian researchers have found that Vitamin B3 protects against the immuno-suppressive effects of sunlight. They say that the vitamin "energizes" cells so that they maintain their immunity. Cells with strong immunity are much less susceptible to skin cancer.

Vitamin B3, known as niacin in the U.S., promotes immunity from damage done by both UVA and UVB light, something that conventional sunscreens may not do.

Lotion or supplement

Tests done on volunteers showed that Vitamin B3 offered equal protection either taken orally as a supplement or in a lotion. It is water soluble so. Conceiveably, one could make it at home by dissolving B3 supplements in water and applying it like sunscreen.

This article does not report on the strength of the supplement or the make-up of the lotion. Nor does it imply that Vitamin B3 might have been what kept humans safe while getting sunshine and the resulting Vitamin D over the course of millions of years of evolution.

The original sunscreens were composed of PABA, another B vitamin, dissolved in alcohol. PABA was abandoned because it stained clothing.
